This cemetery is busy during the holidays (Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc.) so be conscious of mourners. This cemetery offers History Walks on the 8th, 9th, or 10th (depending on what day that Sunday falls on) on a Sunday at 2pm. When entering the cemetery go strait pass the house and on your right there will be a parking lot just after the house behind the maintenance building. I usually park here if it’s not too busy. This is where the clues start. Don’t forget your brain, pen, and a compass. You’ll need it!!

You may have to do some RESEARCH on secret societies and their emblems. In the years before formal health and life insurance, “benevolent societies” were founded to provide their members with companionship, medical care, and death care. Many societies provided a death benefit, such as a tombstone, as part of their membership. The tombstone would most commonly have the societies emblem on it. You will need to know what these emblems look like, the W.O.W, Free Masons, Scottish Rite Mason, the female counterpart to the Free Masons O.E.S, K.O.T.M, Odd Fellows, and the female counterpart to the Odd Fellows DR. If you would like more information about the symbolism of grave markers checkout the field guide "Stories in Stone" by Douglas Keister. The book costs 10$ at Barnes & Noble.

Clues:
From the parking lot walk down K section heading northward. Look on the left side of the road, and find a family plot of Masons. The large family tombstone (last name) starts with a “W”. Look at the female counterpart to the Masons grave. Her initials are M.S. and she should have and Odd Fellows link with three initials in them. I could not find any information on the meaning on the initials in the link, but the Odd Fellows and Masons do share similar symbols from time to time. From here take a reading of 310º to a crypt in the distance that starts with the letter “T”. From here go 180º to a grave marked with the female counterpart to the Odd Fellows. The initials on the grave are F.S. Take the birth and death date on this grave and turn it into a 2-digit month, 2-digit date, and 4-digit year (ex. 01/01/2001). Subtract the birth year from the death year to get the age at death, then add the death day and the birth day to get a number. Subtract the added birth and death day from the age. Take this number and add it to the combined birth and death numbered months. Divide this number by half, and this will be your compass reading. From this grave take the compass reading and head pass two tall spires to a “boy and his pup”. Take the “boy’s” age at death and multiply it by 6 to get your next compass reading. Follow this reading across the road to find a K.O.T.M tombstone. You must be vigilant! It is faint but it is there and not too far inward from the road!! The grave next to the one you are looking for has the initials M.F. and the one you are looking for has the initials E.F. Find the age at death and divide it by half to find your compass reading. Follow this reading till you get to a stone tree stump. This is a typical tombstone for a member of the W.O.W. Look closely and you will see this person was also a Mason! Look to see how old this person was when he died. Use this number as a compass reading. Follow this heading until you come to a relief emblem of the Scottish Rite Master Mason. The large tombstone starts with the letter “K”. With your back to this tomestone turn right down the paved path. When you come to an intersection that has a ship on the left and a golfer on the right, turn right. Follow this paved path till you see a sundial surrounded by two benches on the right side of the road. The large tombstone starts with the letter “P”. At the base of the sundial is a 9 word saying. Find the longest word in the saying, and assign each letter in the word a number according to how it is numbered in the alphabet (ex. A=1, B=2, etc.). Take the two duplicate numbers in the word and add them together. Add this number to the highest numbered letter in the word. Take that total and subtract the third lowest numbered letter in the word from it, this will be your compass reading. Head in this direction toward a large stone cross in the distance with two lilies on it that has a last name starting with the letter “A”. Assign numbers to this horizontal name on the bottom of the cross just as you did before at the sundial. Use the first three numbered letters as a compass reading just as you read them (from left to right), then subtract the 4th letter in the word from the compass reading to make your final compass reading. You should still have a three-digit number. Follow this reading across the road to a man that was in the Odd Fellows. The initials on the tombstone are R.M.C. Take the day of his birthday and use it as a compass reading down the paved path. On the left you should pass another ship. Looking on your left you will see another sundial with an hourglass symbolizing that your time is up and it is now time to reveal the box in question. You will notice this is a family of Masons. Again assign numbers to the last name on the sundial, adding them all up. This number will be the number of paces you need to walk from the sundial to find the location of the box. For the heading, find the age at death of the Mason and the O.E.S members of the family plot. Add these two numbers together for a compass reading. Along the boarder, in a cinderblock, and under a rock (you should be able to feel the plastic) is what you seek.

Please do not forget to put the rock back on top of the box!
