Start from Ayala Cove where, in August 1775, Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala anchored his sailing ship and christened the island Isla de Los Angeles.

From Ayala Cove take Perimeter Road towards the Immigration Station. From 1910 to 1940, the Station processed approximately 175,000 Asian immigrants.

Continue towards Fort McDowell. Federal forces have utilized Angel Island since 1863, but here a quarantine station was built in 1899 to isolate troops exposed to contagious diseases in the Spanish-American War. The cluster of sad yellow buildings on the right is now used as employee residences, but you'll also find a sign indicating where the nearby environmental campsites are located.

Meander up the unnamed path, stop and take a refreshing breath of air from the non-native Eucalyptus trees which are in the process of being ousted in order to restore the island's native oak trees.

At a fork in the path, take a left into the Sunrise Sites. Here you will find drinking water and an environmentally safe outhouse, should your needs run to that necessity.

Site #7 is on the far left. This is where Crazycat celebrated her 40th birthday. Contemplate Life's Mysteries as you stand by the food locker and admire the view.

From here you can see a deer path leading down towards the water. USE CAUTION! The area around the historic buildings and in the vicinity of the bluffs can be dangerous due to erosion. The burnt stump on the left marks the area where the bluff hangs over the field below.

Follow the path down through the grassy are, towards the ruins of a building. Keep an eye out for Poison Oak! Stand at the front center of the ruins, where two lines come to a point. Take in the spectacular view of the East Bay.

Take the path around the right side of the ruins and locate the second to the last, or fourth from the front) concrete row.

Half way towards the middle, hidden under a section of hollow concrete, is what you seek. USE CAUTION! The hollow is perfect for hiding all sorts of creepy crawlies. Verify any occupants are away from home before placing a hand into the hollow.

Please reseal the baggies and the box before replacing.

Note: Perimeter Road provides a 5-mile path around the island. From Ayala Cove it is approximately 2 miles to the letterbox and provides a moderate work out. Wear good shoes and bring a water bottle. Be prepared!
