Sitrep: 10/13/19 Letterbox is gone!....... New Gondala's in it's place ,will be working on getting a new one there this coming year in the Spring........The Fall colors right now are spectacular!

06/19/2011 Beautiful Spring weekend and the letterbox is in good shape. Trails are in excellent shape.

On 10-7-2007 we moved the letterbox from where it was on Highmount over to Belleayre mountain at the top of a ski trail. It is hidden about 20 feet to the South side of the top. It is under the back side of the 6x6 ........buried by blue stone gravel. ...contact me for a better description of how to find it.

The peak colors of Fall are around the 1st and 2nd week of October which is the most beautiful time hunt for this LB
............................................................

This is strenuous hike if you go straight up to it.the top is at 3584 foot elevation.

Really old maps of the Catskills, show the old RED trail that crossed over top in this area , to where the letterbox is. 99.9% of this old trail is is no longer there. Don't waste your time trying to look for it.

Here's a better way:

You will need 4 hours to enjoy this one.

Start at the State Park at B_elleayre S_ki area. Park at the Tomahawk parking lot. Go up the DeerRun ski slope to the service road, at about 3000 feet elevation. At a distance of about 200 feet up the ski trail, from this point, you will find a path through the woods starting from a wood chip pile, which has two downed trees over it. This is on the right hand side of the trail going up. At this spot, travel about 100 yards to the next interesting area. Here you will be on the top of "an old ski slope" looking down over the valley below. Now the letterbox is in a protected place where there is a tremendous weight hovering almost above it. It is covered by a board that is on a slant, out of the general weather. You may have to battle the weeds to get to it or in the winter, the ice and snow. This is not a busy area, kind of like the service at the "Overlook Hotel". A great place to enjoy the fall leaves. Go back the way you came , otherwise the trail down, at this point is about 3 miles back to the spot you started at, from here.

Hike length: 2-3 miles
