The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge is located near Lawton, OK. From Oklahoma City, take I-44 south to Medicine Park/Highway 49 exit, then go west. If coming from Lawton, take US 62 west to Cache exit and go north on Hwy 115. Stop at the visitor’s center (at the intersection of Hwy 49 and 115) or at any of the entrance points to pick up a map of the refuge. Locate the Forty Foot Hole on the map near the Lost Lake. Park at the Lost Lake picnic area and hike approximately 30 minutes to the Forty Foot Hole. You can take the low trail along the water. This path is rockier, but takes you directly to the Forty Foot Hole. The high trail is smoother, but takes you slightly out of the way. The Forty Foot Hole is not marked with a sign. You will know you are there when you stand in the hole at the middle of three small waterfalls looking at graffiti that reads “coo-laid.” From this point climb the rocky path at 125 degrees. When the path splits at the top, take the rockier path at 145 degrees. From the trail marker (a bird sign), begin counting for approximately 22 paces (1 pace = 1 step). Off to the right of the path is a medium sized evergreen tree growing out of the rocks. Behind the tree under some rocks, you will find the Forty Foot Pug Letterbox. Thanks for visiting the Forty Foot Pug Letterbox:)
