UPDATE: I am very happy to announce that the Boulder Room box is back in place.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma is the oldest managed wildlife preserve in the United States. Thanks to Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, over 59,000 acres of gorgeous grassland and mountaintops have been set aside for the enjoyment and propagation of many endangered species of game. Within about 2 miles one afternoon, we saw deer, longhorn, bison and elk. The next day we saw wild turkeys in the same spot. This park is truly one of America’s treasures.

The Visitor Center is at the junction of State Highways 115 and 49, about 20 miles northwest of Lawton. Hours of operation are 10am to 5:30pm, closed Tuesdays and major holidays. Enjoy the museum and pick up a trail map there.

TO THE BOX
Take Highway 49 northwest to the Sunset picnic area.Park at Sunset Picnic Area. Take the concrete trail that passes in front of the bathrooms. Turn left and cross the metal bridge and follow the trail to the right. You will pass another set of restrooms then you will see the Charon Garden Trail signs. Follow the trail staying to the left center. (There are small trails along the main path that branch off. Stay on the main center trail) (Riddle of a change in course: Once water rushed through me, now I am mostly dry. If you cross over me, your treasure you’ll never find. Your turn is marked by a Y in the path and on the side. One is upside down on the ground and the other made of dirt.)You should be heading 188 degrees due South when you make the turn. The trail takes you up hill and back down along the creek. You will start seeing large boulders as you are entering Boulder Fields. Follow the trail through the Jupiner Tree Arch way. The trees will lead your way up through the rocks.
(Riddle to help you make sure you’re on the right track...
I once gave you shade, now I block your way. In order to stay on course you must pass under me first.
I am small and at times wet but I am not where you need to trek. Check off to my side right before me and you will see the course in which you should be.)
You will reach what seems to be a dead end blocked by boulders and a post oak tree. Walk out under the Post Oak tree’s branch that goes over the small boulders. You should see a large up-side down T rock across the way in the tree line. You will also see an Arrow pointing up that will line up with an evergreen tree. Check your location. About 188 degrees south lined with arrow and tree. Now find a heading of 74 degrees E by turning to your left. You are above and at the beginning of the Boulder Rooms.
To find the box follow this riddle.
Head toward the sky where the sunrise. At about 50 is what you will need. I am not a post but I am made of oak. At my base you will find what you are in search of.

Boulder rooms are pretty fun to explore. There are trails that take you under them and out again. If you have time and feel like getting a slight work-out, slide in. I took my 7 yr old along with all my other children down in them. Caution of the wildlife inside the caves. We didn’t see any snakes but we did see several bats. Also there are some high places inside and on top with loose gravel on the floors. Please watch your steps.
