***Letterbox Missing*** I checked on the box on 11/15/06 and discovered it was gone. I also found that the general area had a tendency to flood after heavy rains. I will therefore not be replacing this box. I hope to place a new box in this park or somewhere nearby.

When the Lenni-Lenape Indians were living in Northern New Jersey, a Spring, located in what is now Brookdale Park, served as a tribal gathering place. The Spring was located at the foot of a Six-foot sandstone cliff. This was also the location of a copper mine once used by the same Indians. Legend has it that an Indian Princess committed suicide at the copper mine and still today can been seen haunting this area from time to time. The Spring has long dried-up but rocky creek bed, sandstone cliffs and walls of the tribal gathering place can still be seen.

Brookdale park opened to the public as an Essex County Park in 1936 and was designed by the Olmstead Brothers of Brookline, MA. Today it is a great, family-friendly park full of paved walking paths, soccer fields, a turfed football stadium with running track, children's playground, tennis courts, archery fields and a beautiful rose garden.

This is a very Family friendly letterbox, with paved trails, and easy access. It is however a very active park with lots of people around. Please take care to stay hidden from sight when working with the letterbox and returning the box back to its home.

Use entrance to Brookdale Park that is off Watchung Avenue in Bloomfield. Follow road a short distance to a parking lot on your left. At the back of the parking lot go up the stone steps. Follow paved path to the left. Take second paved path to the right you will pass a stone building on your right(bathrooms) and soccer fields on your left. Once you pass the swings of the children's playground on your right, there will be a fork in the paved path. Take the paved path to the left. This path will cross a small stone bridge that crossed a dry creek bed. Once you see the green park bench on your left stop and look right. Across the open grassy area you will see a large tree stump. Go to tree stump and turn right toward the man hole cover in the grass. Continue past the man hole cover to the low stacked stone wall. This is the location of the Lenni-Lanape Indian gathering place. At the stone wall look right to see a large fat tree. At the base of this tree is what you seek. Please take care to return the box to where you found it, hide it well and be discreet! Enjoy!!
