From Kingston, travel west on Route 28. You will pass the towns of Woodstock/West Hurley, Shokan, Boiceville, Mt. Tremper and Phoenicia. You will come into the Town of Shandaken. In Shandaken, you will pass the Fire House and the Junction of Route 42 on the right hand side. Appoximately 500 feet past Route 42 you will cross a bridge. Turn into the parking area on the right immediately following the bridge. Directly across Route 28 is the railroad track. This track stopped being used back in the 1970's. This track follows the Esopus Creek. It is fairly overgrown, so be prepared to straddle a number of trees that have fallen across the tracks. Follow the tracks for approx. 1/2 to 3/4 mile. You will see a metal building directly on the left side of the railroad tracks. (It is no longer used, and I am not sure what it was for, but I know years ago this part of the Esopus had a small dam. This may have been used for some sort of water project.)
Directly across from the building (on the right side of the tracks) the box is hidden. You will see three large trees together (one is broken half way up). Climb the hill to these trees. If you go to the top of the hill, you have gone too far. The box is beneath the roots of these trees. This is an enjoyable walk. It takes approx. 1/2 hour all together. It may only be suitable for children over 5 years old since you are climbing over fallen trees. Bring your dog. They love to run the tracks. (There is no stamp pad in this box. Please bring your own.) Happy hunting!
