Happy Birthday Daisy!

What better way to spend the day than a volksmarch and letterboxing? Daisy fondly remembers her first volksmarch, a few days after her birthday, in Mainz, Germany, many years ago. And she's still walking. Thanks to the Houston Happy Hikers for hosting this event. (http://www.houstonhappyhikers.org).

This stamp is carved in honor of the American Volkssport Association, the governing body for walking clubs all over the country. (http://www.ava.org) Visit their web site to see what it's all about--a great companion activity to letterboxing!

To get to Lake Houston State Park (actually the park was just a few days ago acquired by the City of Houston, so the "State" isn't really valid any longer), from Houston go north on US 59 to New Caney. Take the FM 1485 exit, turn right on 1485. Follow 1485 to Baptist Encampment Road, turn right. A couple of miles down the road, the entrance to the park will be on the left. Careful! It's right on a snaky turn.

And speaking of snakes, WATCH, for those critters in this park. From the parking area, go east to the park headquarters to pay your day use fee ($3 at this time). Continue east from headquarters and cross the pedestrian bridge over Peach Creek. When you cross the bridge, take the first trail to the right, Peach Creek Trail. You will probably walk about fifteen minutes to get to this box. I have no idea what the distance is. You'll cross two footbridges, keeping Peach Creek on your right. After a while there will be fence posts with no wire between you and the creek.

When you get to a trail junction where there are two signs (one directs you to continue along Peach Creek Trail to the primitive camping and one directs you left to Peach Creek Trail Loop), stand in that junction, look to your right. You will see three corner posts. Behind the middle corner post is the box, hidden under leaves and pine needles. Watch for snakes! Please rehide well after stamping in and let us know how the box is doing.

BTW, if any of you old Girl Scouts think this place looks familiar, the park is the old Peach Creek Ranch Girl Scout Camp. There are several buildings including the 'bathhouse' that you would swear is at Camp Arnold.
