The Sterling Nature Center has many beach access trails. This one is far from the center. Travel along route 104A to a peculiar intersection of l04A, Old State Road (or Co. Rt 20), McIntyre, and Irwin. The South Forty Restaurant is near here. Turn onto Irwin, following it as it winds towards the lake. At the road’s end, you emerge intersecting Marsh road, which has a fairly civilized look with a few homes, etc. Turning left, you should be in sight of the dead end at the lake. On your left, you will come to an unpaved road that has a right and left hand turn lane. Closer to the lake is a single unpaved road. This is private property! Come back to the road with two lanes! This is Dogwood Road. Follow this road watching carefully on the right for a trail with a chain across it. You will travel up a hill and be starting around a curve. It’s less than a ½ mile in. Take this trail.
As you approach the beach, the right hand path will take you down onto it. To find the bait, take the straight path just a short distance further to a clearing on a bank a few feet over the beach. As you look at the lake from the opening, check the base of the second tree to the left. Be very careful to be stealthy amongst the vegetation. You don’t want to give things away! If you continue on the trail, you will intersect with Dogwood Road not too far from your car. If you continue on Dogwood you will intersect Irwin. (Turn right to get home!)
