AUG 2016 - After being closed awhile for repairs, the hostel is open and ready for business!

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 30-60 min. depending on route

A Hitchhiker Hostel is a regular letterbox, but there will be a hitchhiker in residence at all times. You do not need to bring a hitchhiker to visit this box; however, you must bring in a new hitchhiker in order to remove the one staying at the hostel.

Franconia is known for its great hiking opportunities and is host to many through-hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Throughout the summer the local residents give rides to weary hikers who come into town for supplies, and occasionally they offer a place to stay for the night. This hostel gives travelers of a different sort a place to stay as they pass through this community.

Clues:

I93 to Exit 38, then south on Route 18.
First right (Dow Street) over the one lane bridge.
Past intersections with Academy and Harvard.
Left at sign for Fox Hill Park. Park!

Follow the “Scenic Trail” (not “Gale River Trail”). There is a large rock marker thanking the Peckett family for the donation of the land, and just beyond that a sign marking the Bill Holt Memorial Trail. Follow the orange blazes up the switchbacks to the height of land.

At the intersection of the blue and orange trails, stop on the trail and stand facing a small pine tree in the “Y”. There is an orange blaze ahead on the left and a blue blaze ahead on the right. Look west, into the forest. There you’ll see a large moss-covered rock from which a large maple grows. The overhang on the back side of the rock creates a nice shelter where hitchhikers can stay awhile.

Hitchhiker Hostel Guidelines:
•Stamp your personal stamp into the Fox Hill logbook and stamp the Fox Hill image into your logbook.

•IF you have a HH to exchange, stamp the new HH image into the Fox Hill logbook and the Fox Hill image into the new HH logbook.

•IF you do not have a HH to exchange, stamp the resident HH image into your logbook but do not stamp your image into the HH logbook. The HH logbook is only for those who give them rides and the boxes where they stay.

•Never stamp any HH images into other HHs.

Once you’re done stamping and zipping up all those baggies, you have several options:
1. Return the way you came. EASY
2. Follow the orange blazes down the back side of the hill. At a “T” intersection turn left and follow the white blazes back to your car or detour right a little ways to some nice swimming holes in the Gale River. EASY
3. Follow the blue blazes down the back side of the hill, going left at intersections until you come to the river. Here you’ll find the nice swimming holes and white blazes leading you back to your car. This trail is well marked but the terrain is rough and infrequently traveled. There are a few intersections that could be tricky. ADVENTUROUS
