This letterbox is designed to be done at night. It can be done during daylight hours (much less fun) and there is a geocache in this area. My cousin, a geocacher, put in a night-time box with a Halloween theme and I’ve decided to use his trail to place a letterbox in this area. It is placed with his knowledge.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Night time only…a little creepy…
Terrain: Wicked easy
Time: about 20 mins. If you’re not scared of the dark…
Distance: 0.12 mile
Box is very small so logbook is also very small. No room for hitchhikers. You will need a flashlight or headlamp and a compass. No ink or pencil in box, bring your own.

CLUES

This letterbox is located in Postwood Park in Hannawa Falls, NY. From State Highway 56, turn onto Church St. At the fork, go straight onto Postwood Rd. Do not follow River Rd. around to the left. You will come to a large open parking area on the left. Park at the far end of the lot.

If you haven’t noticed the reflective tacks from your car, you’ll see them on the electric pole in front of you. There are two small round “fire” tacks on this pole. This is where you start. From this pole, the trail goes into the woods on your left. Standing by the pole, shine your light at a 150 degree heading and you should see more tacks. Keep scanning your flashlight ahead of you on the trail. You will see round orbs of light reflected back at you. Follow the trail of tacks into the woods.

When you get to a tree with a diamond of fire tacks, stop here. Step up to this tree from the trail with your left shoulder touching it. Turn so that your nose is right at the trunk. If you glance around the tree and scan with your flashlight, you’ll see a 3-trunked skinny set of trees in line with the fire tack tree. Go to that tree. From the 3-trunked tree, do as you did before and go to the next tree in line, a single tree. From that tree, you will see another in line. Finally, you can scan your flashlight ahead of you to see a group of 4 trees with lots of broken limbs around it on the ground. The group of 4 has one trunk that is mostly stripped of bark and another that is broken. If you search in the crook of these trunks, you may find Night Owl.

The box is small and round with a white lid. It also has reflective tape on it so you can see it with your flashlight. Please be sure to replace it as you found it! And try your best to be sure it will not be seen from the trail. Fire tacks also show you the way out.

To do this box in the daytime, simply look for the tacks in the trunks of the trees along the trail. They are relatively easy to spot…white and round. Then follow the directions once you reach the “diamond” tree. If you’re up for a longer walk, look for “Sun of a Beach” further up these trails.
