"Three Strikes, Yer OUT"! A phrase Sunday Charlie probably never heard. Box replaced 8/17/2007, with new clues. Hopefully, Third times a charm. Please, be discreet and re-hide well. If you've stamped before, well, those stamps are lost - nice trail, new clues, please visit again! This box is located along the Kaiser Trail in Paw Paw, MI. Paw Paw, MI is just North of I-94, exit 60. At the main intersection in Paw Paw (M-40 & Red Arrow Highway), go West .3 mile. Maple Lake Park to the North, LaCantina Ristorante to the South. Parking Lot just West of LaCantina.
Easy trail, Easy walk, 20-30 mins. round trip.
The bridge and trail were dedicated June 2006 to Paul Kaiser who served 31 years as engineer for the VanBuren County Road Commission, then spent 15 years as consultant with the village of Paw Paw.
Charlie "Paw Paw" Maxwell played professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers wearing lucky number 24 1955-1962. He was also known as "Sunday Charlie" for his propensity to hit home runs on Sundays. Charlie batted and threw left handed. In 1956, he hit 28 home runs and batted .326. Although dubbed with the nickname "Paw Paw", Charlie Maxwell was born in Lawton, MI 4/8/1927. In his 14 season career, he was a .264 hitter with 148 home runs and 532 RBI in 1133 games.
Clues: Start by crossing the Paul Kaiser Bridge. Take time to observe...there were Seven Swans A-Swimming today, and lots of ducks too. Continue over the river and through the woods, you'll come to a clearing. Follow the mulch path around and up to Bob's Memorial Stone & Tree.
Take Charlie's jersey number of paces East over the Rotary Club Bridge. Turn around, to read the dedication plaque on another stone. Take 2 or 3 side steps toward Charlie's dominant side. Go forward number of steps equal to home runs in '56. You're facing West. You're at Home Plate. You're going to hit a line drive past the short stop. Follow that line drive the number of steps equal to the seasons of Charlie's professional baseball career. Now, into the underbrush the number of steps equal to the number of years Charlie played for Detroit. There's quite a large tree standing on your right, a fallen one right in front of you. The 'box is under the fallen one, covered with bark. Picnic tables, benches conveniently located for stamping... After stamping, you can either head back the way you came, OR...head east from the benches one block, then North 2 blocks. There's an ice cream parlor on the corner...from there go West to your car.
