The Woods Hollow Nature Preserve in the Town of Milton is abundant with wildlife and many bird species, including our favorite white-breasted nuthatch, which you may see flitting among the pine trees. The Preserve features several nice hiking trails and a fishing pond. The hike to and from the letterbox is less than ½ mile. Directions: From Rt. 50 between Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa turn west on North Line Rd. (there’s a traffic light there). Turn right at the next intersection onto Rowland St. Drive 2/10 mile to the 3rd entrance into the Preserve on Rowland Street. This entrance has a small parking area in front of some park maps. Clues – After you check out the park maps, begin walking the wide trail between them. When you come to the signpost, follow the Yellow Loop trail. Then go toward the “Lookout”. At the “Y” (bench) bear left, continuing on the wide path. Turn right at the next “intersection”. You’ll soon come to a split rail fence and a bench with a nice view of the pond. While sitting on the bench and looking at the pond, extend your left arm parallel to the bench. You’ll be pointing at a clump of fallen trees approximately 17 giant steps away. Buried in the duff beneath the west end of the largest log you’ll find the little “upside down bird” (so called because they like to feed in that posture).
As of 12/5/2006 this letterbox contains only a logbook and stamp (no stamp pad).
