I grew up in West Texas and there were no tall pines where I lived. Our house, however, was on my grandparents’ cotton farm and they both grew up near San Augustine, in deep East Texas, where there was an abundance of pine trees of all sizes. I can picture my granny as a young woman, looking out her window and seeing a particularly tall pine. I can see her picturing the triangular design of that tree and transforming it into a quilt block. This quilt block letterbox is for my granny.
Directions:
From Point Blank, go east on US 190 2.9 miles to its intersection with FM 980. Take FM 980 northeast until you reach Waterwood Parkway. On your left just past the intersection, you’ll notice a sign for The Chapel of the Nativity. Take the first left, about 100 yards past the intersection and park in front of the Chapel. This is a small chapel in the woods which was built with logs from a 19th century house from Moscow and which is always open to the public. Stop in and see the Nativity scene.
To the box:
When you are ready, go around behind the chapel and find the trail marker. This is part of the Waterwood nature trail and is marked with blue paint on trees along the trail. Take the easy hike a short distance to Pools Creek and enjoy the waterfall. This is a seasonal creek, but maybe when you’re there you’ll be fortunate enough to see the water cascading over the fall. This is a beautiful and serene spot. At the waterfall, turn around to face the trail you just took. On your left you will see two tall pines growing about four feet apart. The letterbox is between them, covered with pine needles and a rock.
