Remembrance Letterbox

We planted this letterbox in remembrance of those who lost their lives and those who risked their lives on 9/11/01. As you walk through the Franklin Town Forest, may you keep with you thoughts of them and their family and loved ones.

Directions:
From Rte 495, take exit 16 toward Franklin. Go through the set of lights and passed Spruce Pond on the right. Summer Street will be about 1.5 on your right (If you reach a second set of lights, you have passed the turn. Follow Summer Street to #373 (a pond with a fountain lies in the front yard). The entrance to and shoulder parking for Franklin Town Forest is on the left, across from #373.

Clues:

The beginning of the trail heads through grass, golden rod, grapes, cedars and swamp maples.

Walk about a hundred feet until you reach the edge of the pine and oak forest at a T intersection. Turn left and follow the trail towards the woods.

In about 50 yards, turn right and follow that trail through an opening in a stone wall. Continue downhill, going through a second stone wall.

You will shortly reach an intersection. Immediately opposite you will notice a large pine with red paint sprayed on it. Turn right.

The trail will soon fork. Bear right.

On the right side a trail will merge onto the one you are walking. As you continue, you will notice two stone walls through the trees on your right. There will also be a path on your left. Continue walking parallel to the stone walls.
Ignore two other trails you will pass on your left.

Soon the trail will split. These paths rejoin in an opening in the woods which is marked by stately pines – some alive, some dead.

When amongst these pines, look through the trees on your right. You will be able to see the granite walls of a cliff.

Notice the stone wall on the right. Follow the overgrown path that runs next to and parallel to the stone wall. Follow the path uphill to the right side of the cliff. The path turns left.

About 20 feet after turning left you will notice a spot about five feet long where you can step down and look over the cliff.

When you reach this “landing”, turn right, leaving your back to the edge of the cliff. About 20 paces ahead stands the largest pine in the immediate area. The trunk is about 1.5 to 2 feet in diameter. The letter box is on the opposite side of the pine at its base and under a rock.

Retrace your steps back down and around the cliff, going back along the stone wall and out to the clearing.

Turn left and retrace your steps the second left. Turn right.

This trail climbs a small hill. Bear left at the top of the hill descend the other side.

Where the trail forks, stay right. Follow this trail a short distance to a T intersection and turn left on this well-defined trail.

You will soon step onto a short board walk.

At the next fork, bear right to get back on the original path.

On your right, look for the large pine marked with red paint. Turn left onto the trail immediately across from the red painted pine. Follow this trail back uphill and to the left to get back to parking.
