Location: Willard Library
21 N 1st Ave
Evansville, IN

This box was planted in honor of my mother's 74th birthday. She spent many, many, hours of her girlhood here, perched on a windowsill, reading her way through the shelves of books, absolutely determined she was going to finish them all.

WILLARD LIBRARY was established and endowed in 1876 by local philanthropist Willard Carpenter, who declared it to be "a public library for the use of the people of all classes, races, and sexes, free of charge forever." It formally opened on March 28, 1885. At over 120 years old, Willard is the oldest public library building in the state of Indiana.

HOURS OF OPERATION:
Monday and Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesday thru Friday: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

DIRECTIONS:

Once you enter the first floor of this beautiful old library, head to the back wall and find the metal relief plaque of Willard Carpenter.

Standing in front of Mr. Carpenter, look to the stack on your right. Squat down facing the books-- the item you seek is in a magnetic box just above the bottom row of books, hidden to the left. (Look at Willard now--he's looking right at you, isn't he? I am counting on him to keep a watchful eye on this letterbox!)

It should be fairly easy to find this box discreetly, but I am not sure how easy it will be to stamp your logbook without being seen. You may need to leave this room and stamp it elsewhere.

Once you have replaced the box in its original location, be sure to explore the other floors of this gorgeous old library. It has wonderful character, and is said to be the home of its own ghost, the Lady in Grey. http://www.libraryghost.com/

Congratulations to Earth Mother, the first finder!
