Among the Oaks

A Brief History:
Bishop Hill, a national Landmark sight, was established as a communal settlement in 1846 by Swedish immigrants seeking religious freedom and economic opportunities. This charming village, 160 miles west of Chicago, once was a prosperous colony of 100 industrious Swedes who built 18 buildings of handmade bricks, the finest west of Chicago, farmed 12,000 acres of land, exported broom corn and linen, and turned out sturdy wagons and fine carriages.
They created a communal society on the Illinois prairie in which the members lived together, took meals together, and shared equally in the profits.
After 16 years, the colony was disbanded by mutual consent and the property was divided among the members.

More information can be found at http://www.bishophill.com/index.php.

After a lunch at the Red Oak of the best Swedish Meatballs I've ever had, salad with Poppy seed dressing and Lingonberry lemonade, stroll North to the town square.

There are two statues in this park. Please proceed to the obelisk-looking Swedish Monument ( the one without the soldier ).

Write down the top date 18_____
and then the bottom date 18_____

Subtract the second date from the first ____ then subtract 2 more ______(answer A).

Once you have those two dates, go stand before the other statue - the one with the soldier on top.
You will find a triangle-shaped cement cannon ball holder (with the cannon balls missing) directly East of the statue.
(It must have held cannon balls in a display with the two short cannon's nearby)
Put your heels together at the apex of the triangle while FACING the statue.
Read about the Loyal Sons of Bishop Hill and Vicinity who fought to preserve our Union. The day I stood here, a band played "America, the Beautiful." It was a gorgeous day and quite moving.

Take a compass reading 250 degrees, and "note" what lies at _____(answer A) paces.

When finished, please re hide the box and enjoy a day of shopping in the quaint town I love to visit. Oof Da!
