In one of the earliest engagements of the Civil War, Union regiments under the command of General George B. McClellan attacked and defeated Confederate troops defending a strategic mountain pass on the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike. This Union victory, west of the town of Beverly (then county seat of Randolph County, Virginia), gave the Federal forces control over much of Appalachian northwestern Virginia, and allowed these counties to form the government that eventually led to the creation of a new state -- West Virginia.

Rich Mountain Battlefield is several miles west of Beverly, West Virginia. Beverly is just south of Elkins on US Route 219/250. From Beverly, turn west off of U.S. Route 219\250 onto Rich Mountain Road. Take the road up to the top of the mountain to reach the battlefield.

This is a short, easy walk on a small battlefield on top of a mountain. You drive to the top and park in the lot at the back of the battlefield.

Park your car, and walk around the battlefield and read the plaques that describe the 4 hour struggle. Once you've finished, locate the Stable Yard and read the sign there. Then take the trail into the woods, staying to the right at the larger forks. You are heading up hill to the large boulders you see ahead of you. Stay on the trail until you reach a gravel road. Turn right and walk about 15-18 paces (every other footfall is a pace). You'll see a washout opening on your right. Walk in a few steps and stand on the large orangeish rock in the ground. Look to your left and spy the medium sized maple tree about 10-15 feet away. Walk to the tree then turn around. Underneath the flat rock facing you is what you seek. Box is covered with camo tape so will not be easily spotted. Never reach under rocks or into trees with your hands, use a stick to retrieve the box. Bring your own ink.
