**Unfortunately it sounds like all boxes are now missing. It is still a nice place to visit though!**

The Lake Alice Wildlife Management Area encompasses 1,468 acres of land. Don’t worry, this trip won’t cover nearly all of them! The land has been used for agriculture and timber harvesting, and there are water control structures that were used to generate hydro-electric power. Today it used for recreational purposes as well as natural resource education, wildlife observation, fishing, and hunting. There is a large variety of waterfowl that can be found here, and on the day I planted this series, we saw over 20 frogs of varying sizes. More information can be found at http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/reg5/wmamaps/lakealic.htm

The parking area is a short (5 minute) drive from I-87, the Northway. I estimate the series to take between an hour and an hour and a half to find all four.

To get to Lake Alice:
Take I-87 to exit 41, Chazy. Head west on Route 191. At the 4 corners (Miner Institute), turn left on Ridge Road. Continue 1.4 miles, going past the skating rink on the left and the first Lake Alice sign on the right at MacAdam. Turn right into an unmarked parking lot ringed by large rocks. Sign in at the registry, and you are ready to go.

The White Rabbit
From the registry, you should be able to spot the path behind the gate at your left. Follow the path alongside the big lake on your left, and a smaller lake on your right. After the smaller lake ends, keep going a short distance to a very large cluster of trees and brush on your left. Walk counterclockwise around this cluster until you can walk inside. The rabbit hopped up to hide the fork of a large 4-trunked tree that is about shoulder height, but this tree was damaged by a storm. He decided to look for a hollow in the base of the tree and took shelter there.

The Cheshire Cat
Continue on the path a ways, taking note of an interesting trail to your right. When you reach this new trail, walk about 75 steps in. On the right are several good sized rocks. Facing the pine with a board attached to it, look at about 1:30 for a 6-7 foot stump with a downed root base. The cat is hiding at the base of the stump under some branches. (Thank you to some local geocachers who made me aware that the terrain has changed since I was there last!)

The Queen of Hearts
You are now going to turn around and head back to your car. [The Queen of Hearts was rescued by a local fisherman in the spring of 2009. He let me know that the box and logbook was wet, and would be returning the box at a later date. As of early September, the box has not been returned, but I haven't given up hope! I'm leaving the clue, since you'll walk right past the location on your return, and there's always a chance the box will be back in place.]
About 30 steps before the gate, on your right is a large standing tree with many downed logs about 10 feet from the path. The queen has a view of the lake, and is tucked into her throne of roots and protected from the elements by some bark.

Alice in Wonderland
Of course you can’t forget Alice! Since she is not originally from Wonderland, she is on a trail all her own. Back in the parking lot, look for the Nature Trail sign. It may be hard to spot, but as you face the trail registry, look to the right. It is not a very well-traveled path, but then, how many people have really walked in Alice’s footsteps? Walk along the trail for a few minutes until you get to a wooden bridge. As you come toward the bridge, Alice thought about hiding under the right approach between two side beams. She heard that was a little dangerous though, so she turned around and walked 70 steps back along the path (Alice is 5'4", like me, so you may have to take more or less steps if you're significantly taller or shorter than her). On her right, the trees thinned slightly and she saw three downed logs forming a block C shape. She decided to hide where the two logs closest to the path met. Make sure you help her hide well when you're done!

I hope you have enjoyed your visit to Lake Alice in Wonderland! Please let me know if you’ve found my boxes!
