Distance: less than 1 mile
Difficulty: moderate
Season: all year -during low tide
I'm told this box is missing
Directions: Go to Dana Point Harbor off Hwy 1. Go past the Harbor to the Dana Point Ocean Institute. Park at the Institute and walk behind it to the Dana Pt. Marine Protected Area. Go down the caged in steps and to the right. Make sure you go during low tide or when the tide is going out. Continue across the sandy beach. When the rocks start go along the base of the mountain for about 400 steps or until you see a house along the top edge of the mountain. You will see two houses with a canyon in between. The house on the right you can only see the wooden fence. One of the rock formations looks like an upside down ice cream cone. At the base of the mountain you will see ice plant growing over some exposed roots. Under the roots is a hollowed area. Just above that area is a hollowed area just under the ice plant. There is a rock about the size of a football. Behind that rock is the box. Enjoy the tide pools near the stairs. The Ocean Institute is pretty cool too.
It has been reported that this box is missing. I suppose the harsh waves could have washed it away.
