Adopted by The V's on 4/18/2011. Only note I would add is that the Green trail is a beautiful and steep hike up, and that the trailhead for the white trail is back down the entrance road just after the brook and bridge. I would bring a trail map if you can.

This letterbox is on one of our (the original planter) favorite mountains. We climb Belknap every time we come to the Lakes Region of NH. It is a short hike up (less than 1 mile), because you drive halfway up the mountain. It is an easy hike for kids to get a great view of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains. There is a firetower on top that you can climb up to see the views. Sometimes, there is a fire ranger there who will invite you into the tower to learn about what he does.

To find Belknap Mountain, go to Route 11a in Gilford, NH. Turn onto Belkap Mountain Road, right in downtown Gilford. Follow that road for about 3 miles, through town, past the schools, up the hill, until you come to a dirt road on the left that has a sign "Belknap Mountain." Take that road all the way up to the parking area on Belknap Mountain. The road is rough, so drive carefully.

To find the letterbox, climb up to the top of the mountain and the firetower. Go up the firetower and enjoy the view and the cool breeze. Come down from the mountain and look for the “white” trail, as demarcated by white painted lines on the summit rocks. It is also called the “Piper Mountain Trail,” which you will see painted on the rocks. Start walking down the rocks on the white trail. At the bottom of the rocks, turn right and walk into the center of a group of rocks on the right. Look for the rock that looks like it has been sliced like a loaf a bread. The letterbox is under that rock under a pile of sticks.

Please stamp the book and be sure to hide the box well when you are done. Enjoy!
