A great place for outdoor activities in Iron Mountain is City Park. It offers shady trees and picturesque hills. After the iron mines in the area were well-established, the city decided to build a park for its citizens. They picked a portion of lands belonging to the mining company, Hewitt and Jones, and offered $20/acre. The company refused to sell, so the city simply condemned the land and started the park.

Summertime activities include Italian bocce ball courts, picnicing areas and a large log pavillion suitable for gatherings. The pavillion dates back to 1911. Deer watching is possible in the large fenced yard, and tennis, soccer, hiking and biking trails are available. Disc golf has become a popular sport here and takes you all over the park. Winter brings groomed cross-country skiiing, snowshoeing and a sledding hill once used as a ski-jumping arena.

From the center of downtown Iron Mountain, turn left (west) at the first stoplight onto B Street. Go two blocks and turn right onto Carpenter Avenue. Go one more block and turn left onto A Street. Travel 1 mile to the end of A Street. Directly across the way, you will see the entrance to the park.

Follow the road past the bocce ball courts, log pavillion and children's playground on your left. When the road forks, stay right and go down the hill past the deer yard until the road ends in a parking lot. This is the trailhead for hiking and skiing and Disc Golf. Find golf basket #8. Stand at the basket and use your compass to sight 40 degrees NE. You will see a bird house and beyond it, a multi-trunk tree.

Please be sure no one is watching you as this is a busy park.
