The Heart and Eagle are a natural phenomenon found on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Somehow the rocks and trees form these shapes that can be seen all across the San Luis Valley in any season, even when there’s heavy snow. The only time they are hard to see is in the morning when the mountains are backlit.

TO THE BOX
From our Al-li-ga-torz box, go 5 ½ miles north on SR 17 to the local UFO Spotting Tower. This area became popular with Alien Enthusiasts after a rash of strange horse mutilations in the late 1990s. The dark, wide-open skies make for perfect (although a bit chilly!) spaceship spotting.

Park at the main gate along SR 17. There is a fenced-in property right next to it. The box is between the corner post and the post next to it along the main road, under a couple of rocks. *** (This area is conspicuously free of rocks, making ours look very suspicious. If you could bring a few rocks to throw down nearby, it would be greatly appreciated!) ***

Standing on top of the box site, look toward 56* from north, between the power pole and the support cable on its right. You should be able to easily see the Heart and Eagle framed there, near the top of the mountain range.
