This letterbox is named for Brittany, an alpaca, who lives at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice adjacent to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
About White Violet Center for Eco-Justice
At White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, you'll find a straw bale house, a herd of alpacas, almost 400 acres of state certified organic farmland, beehives, a large composting site, a berry patch, a farmer's market May through September, a water garden, a bluebird trail, classified forest, and orchards full of apple, pear, peach, cherry and plum trees. An environmental education coordinator teaches children the message that all creation is connected, using more than 10 different environmental education programs. Many groups and clubs such as garden clubs, 4-H, scout troops, women's auxiliaries, college students, homeschooling families and women religious enjoy touring the center. White Violet Center for Eco-Justice is a ministry of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, about 7 miles northwest of Terre Haute, Indiana.
About Brittany
Alpacas look like small llamas, but have different shaped ears, smaller heads, and longer fleece (or "fibers", the more accurate technical name). Brittany is 6 years old and has thick, brown fibers. She is inquisitive and likes to be in the thick of things. She is also very affectionate. Some alpacas will let you kiss them on the nose, but Brittany prefers to check you out. The alpacas at White Violet may be "adopted" for fundraising, but Brittany has already been claimed. Check out the White Violet website for information on how to make a donation to the Center and "adopt" an alpaca.
About the Brittany Letterbox
Go to St. Mary-of-the-Woods campus. Take the steps down to a prayer grotto. From the altar, face the "congregation" and at a reading of 330 you'll see a concrete bridge with 3 arches. Under the right-most arch is hidden the Brittany Letterbox, made for an alpaca lover.
