This is the third of the Keystone Letterbox series of state symbols. This stamp is a hand-carved image of the majestic Eastern Hemlock that once graced these mountains for thousands of years. Now most have been harvested with a few isolated stands that remain (see "Old Growth" letterbox for a hike among one of the remaining, yet disappearing, stands of old growth forest).
This letterbox is located near one of the finest views within all of Pennsylvania. It is noteworthy to identify the viewing wall that was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. If you take the time to travel the dirt roads in the surrounding counties you have the CCC to thank for their creation - they accomplished incredible feats in relatively unknown regions.
After taking in this astonishing view, return towards the parking lot and take the time to view the panel and monument collection related to the state forests. You will note that this unique assembly of stones is surrounded by....a keystone!
By standing outside the keystone directly behind the monument sample from the region which has Scranton as its district office you will need to solve the simple math problem to find the proper compass heading. In each case, use the district number that each district office is located in.
Emporium X Ebensburg = A
Blain X Coudersport = B
Laurelton X Huntingdon = C
Ebensburg = D
A + B + C + D = compass heading
For the appropriate number of steps:
Wellsboro X McConnellsburg = E
Clearfield = F
E - F = steps
Proceed to the appropriate tree. Walk around the other side and two steps down the hill is a large, loose stone. There is a beautiful hemlock awaiting you there. Be cautious as there could be snakes around. Please feel free to update us on the condition of this box and do enjoy your journey! Bring you own ink and a camera too!
Here's a link to a photo taken on a very foggy day of the majestic view. Yours should be significantly better!
