The Martin Van Buren letterbox, our second presidential box, is located on the Van Buren trails across the street from the Van Buren National Historic Site, Lindenwald, in Kinderhook on Route 9H. Trail maps can be found here but they aren't necessary to find the box. The trails are free and are open dawn to dusk, but go ahead and take a tour of the house. SEE Martin Van Buren's expensive hand-painted French wallpaper. WITNESS a marble bust of Emperor Van Buren outfitted in a Roman toga. IMAGINE the kind of parties that Dolly Madison must have thrown.

Start out at the trail head pavillion. Take the outer loop (white trail) After a short while, watch out for a trail marker to your left. Take the blue/red trail. Watch for another trail marker and veer off to the left on the red trail. Continue on the red trail. At the WATER sign, stay on the red trail for a little longer and take the blue trail on your left. At the entrance to the blue trail, there is a post with the number 13 on it. From this post walk 8 paces 40 degrees to a large stump. You can't miss it! Your prize is behind a side of the stump that is actually fake.

To get back, go back on the red trail and continue to the intersection, and take a right on the white trail.
