Emerald Pool Letterbox
******* Replaced 8/13/07. New more secure location. New log book and custom stamp.

Emerald Pool Letterbox is an easy family hike which not only offers the letterbox but a wonderful swimming hole for the whole family. An easy 20-25 minute (0.7 miles) hike on level ground. After finding the letter box be sure to take a dip in the cool refreshing pool. For the more adventurous the surrounding cliffs offer a nice place to take a plunge into the 12-15 foot deep pool.

To get to the parking area from Route 302 in Fryeburg, Maine take Route 113. Route 113 runs along the NH/ME state line. Route 113 makes several turns but the road is clearly marked. From the Stow General Store the parking area will be exactly 5.6 miles on your right side shortly after a small cemetery and AMC Road. You will see a brown sign for Baldface Circle Trailhead. Turn right into the parking lot. There is no fee and restrooms are available.

To begin your hike walk across Route 113 and head up 113 (North) about 200 feet. You will see the trailhead for Baldface on the left (west) side of the road. Follow the yellow blazes on the trees. After about 15 minutes of walking you will come to a series of log bridges (first a single log, then 2 logs right after each other). Shortly after the log bridges the trail will turn to the left and the right. A tree directly in front of you will have a yellow sign that says “Bearing Tree”. Listen carefully and you can hear the water. You are getting close! Take the trail on the left. After 2-3 more minutes you will see signs for several trails. Turn right and follow the sign to Emerald Pool. Shortly after turning on the Emerald Pool trail there will be a steep hill going down. Towards the end of the steep part you will see a rotted tree stump on the left side of the trail pointing towards the river, behind the tree stump are 2 large rocks. Walk behind the stump and rocks. You can see another rotted tree stump towards the bank of the river. Your prize will be in the center of that stump under a rock.

This is a popular area, please re-hide well so the letter box is not visible.

Go back to the trail and continue for another minute to reach Emerald Pool. No more letterboxes but you can't go that far without seeing the falls and pool.

Enjoy!
