On July 19,1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition pushed their way up the Missouri River and entered an awe-inspiring canyon with limestone walls 1200 feet high. Lewis remarked these "are the most remarkable cliffs that we have yet seen".Lewis later wrote in his journal "from the singular appearance of this place I called it the gates of the rocky mountains."

HOW TO GET THERE

Take exit 209 on Interstate 15, about 20 miles north of Helena, Mt.Follow the signs to the boat docks. You can take your own boat or take the tour boat that runs late spring to early fall.

FROM THE MERIWETHER PICNIC GROUND WALK UP CANYON TO THE FOREST RANGERS CABIN. (Note that they stay all summer and have no electricity) NOW FOLLOW THE VISTA POINT TRAIL 1/2 MILE TO THE TOP AND ENJOY THE VIEW.

TURN BACK THEY WAY YOU CAME 100 FEET OR SO TO THE SIGN THAT READS MANN GULTCH TRAIL. FACE THE SIGN AND LOOK TO THE ONE O'CLOCK POSITION OR 30 DEGREES MAGNETIC.YOU WILL SEE A LARGE ROCK AND A JUNIPER BUSH...LOOK INSIDE FOR AN OLIVE BUCKET OF BROWN.
