This letterbox was placed by myself and Baby Deer on to commemorate Baby Deer’s 2006 summer vacation in Hood River. It was placed with her God-Cousin “Spier” in mind for his 11th birthday. What a great summer they shared!!!

Clues…
In Hood River, overlooking the great Columbia River, is Ruthton Park, a roadside picnic spot with an awesome view looking west down the Columbia River. From I-84 (east or west), take exit 62 and turn north to a “T” in the road. Left will take you west down Westcliff Drive, past the Historic Columbia Gorge Hotel and on to Ruthton Park on the right side of the road just as you pass the Charburger restaurant.

This is where the knights (boy knights) and knigtesses (girl knights) draw their swords (if you don’t happen to be packin’ yer own… just pretend). Go to the king’s rocky fortress that bears the name of the kingdom you’re in. From that position pull out your trusty, royal compasses to guide you in your quest.

At 300 degrees northwest (magnetic) it has been told that in ancient times a kind and courageous young man slayed a dragon to protect his fair maiden from the doom of a drop from the cliff to the river below. Cautiously make your way to the viewpoint and imagine what it might be like to fight the dragon from that very spot. Whatta view!!

With that dragon slayed, continue your adventure by finding the royal picnic table set aside for the Knights of the Rectangle Table to feast at 200 degrees magnetic. Head to the table and join your fellow swordsmen and women for your imaginary feast. When you’re done feasting and ready to conclude this quest, have a seat on the northernmost bench and face 265 degrees magnetic to find your final foe. There before you is a knarly giant guarding the treasure you seek. One of his many mangled feet cover your prize, but you must defeat him in a final battle before the treasure is yours. Which foot covers the treasure is for you to discover.
