**Box no longer at this hiding spot...this box became an accidental hitchiker!**

I just received an email today from a kind woman who picked up the letterbox, not knowing what it was. She has it with her in NC, but will send it to me when she gets home to FL. However, since I live in PA, it will be almost a year before this box is returned to its proper hiding spot.

This is a good commercial for why it is so important to rehide boxes well...

Brandy & Blueberries on Pelky Bay

This letterbox is a virtual driveby…however, my guess is that once you see the view, you’ll find it hard to leave!

The letterbox is located on Pelky Bay on Upper Saranac Lake. To access the site, go north on route 30 about 1.8 miles from the intersection of 3 & 30. As you get close, you will be able to see the lake through the trees on the right side of the road. At the closest point between the road and the lake, there is a small sandy pull-off area on the right. Park here.

Clues

On the shore, find two old sentinels who once watched over this bay. In front of one of these sentinels is a shallow valley, likely caused by soil compaction during the repeated freezing of the lake. In this valley, under the blueberry bushes at the foot of this old soldier, hunt for something blue. What you seek is protected by the branches of a small conifer and covered over with bark from our old friend.

Please be sure to rehide the letterbox well as this is a favorite stopping place for passers-by.

Other Notes

Enjoy the blueberries! Just to the right of the hiding spot (as you look at the lake) is a paper birch overhanging the water. To the right of this birch is a blueberry bonanza! The blueberries can be picked both from land and the water.

Farther to the right of the blueberry patch, Brandy Brook flows into Pelky Bay. (You may notice the large rocks on either side of the tiny brook.) If wading in the water, you will recognize “Brandy” both by her color and her temperature!

This spot offers scenic views of several mountains…I cannot name all of them, but the most prominent one is Ampersand…farthest to the left, with a double “hump.” While not one of the 46 High Peaks, Ampersand provides wonderful 360o vistas of both lake country and mountain country. I recommend it when you have ~4 hours to devote to hiking.

The stamp here is significant because my family owns a camp, Four Winds, that is just to your left. I grew up coming to this spot every summer, swimming at the natural beach, and picking blueberries. If you are visiting in the summer, you will likely see our dock to your left. My grandfather built this modest cabin in the 1960’s, and my grandmother lived here year-round for many years after his death in 1974. Unfortunately, none of us is close enough to stay here for more than a week at a time, so we rent our camp at times when family is not using it. If you think you might be interested in renting our camp, contact me and I'll give you the appropriate information.

If you Geocache, there is also a geocache very close by.

If you find this box, please contact me to let me know the condition. This box will likely be an orphan because I am only an annual visitor to the Adirondacks (unfortunately!).
