5/10/08 - This box (and original stamp) has been retired. Please see 2008 Big Bison Hitchhiker Hostel for information on the new stamp and new location.

If you are driving into the mountains from Denver on I-70, don't miss the buffalo herd at Genesee Park (exit 254). They can be seen on either side of the interstate because of a connecting tunnel under the freeway. There is a viewing area on the SE corner of the exit where you can watch this endangered species in their natural environment of grassy hills and Ponderosa Pines. With an easy off and on ramp, this is a must see stop!

Follow the signs to Genesee Park (on the South side of I-70, turn right at the T intersection). Shortly after turning, you will see a Genesee Park sign and a fenced in buffalo enclosure on the right side of the road. On the left is a parking area with a few picnic tables. Park here.

There are large rocks at the southern end of the fenced buffalo enclosure. Between the first two rocks, there is a trail heading up the hill. The corner of the fenced area has silver colored fence posts, but the fencing along the trail has green posts.

Walk about 100 steps up the trail until you are in line with the first silver fence post up the hill. From this spot on the trail, take a compass reading of 90 degrees. Ten steps in this direction will take you to a tree stump. Four more steps will take you to the second stump where the Big Bison is hiding under bark.

Please be discrete when removing and rehiding the hostel. You might want to return to the picnic tables to stamp in and enjoy the hitchhikers in the box.

This box has a permanent stamp and logbook, and is a hostel for hitchhiker exchange.

Hitchhiker Hostel Guidelines:

*Stamp your personal stamp into the Big Bison logbook and stamp an image of the Big Bison image into your logbook.

*Please remember to write your trail name, date visited, and any comments into the the Big Bison logbook.

*Swap any HHs you wish. Stamp your personal stamp into any HHs you are leaving and taking. Please don’t take a HH unless you leave one, unless a HH has been there too long (over 6 months) and you will be able to plant it in a new box within 2 weeks.

*Stamp HH images into the Big Bison logbook for any HHs you are leaving.

*Stamp the Big Bison image into the logbook of any HHs you are leaving.

*Feel free to take images of any HHs that are currently in the hostel; however, don't stamp in with your sig-stamp if you aren’t taking it.

*Never stamp any HH images into other HHs.

It can get very confusing as you stamp into different HHs, so please take your time, stamp-in properly (as listed above), and don't get components of different HH's mixed up with each other. Please seal each and every one back up real tight.

While in the area, you can also visit the Catnip letterbox, one of my earlier primitive carving efforts.

The box contains a pen and first finders prize. I plan on visiting and replenishing hitchhikers regularly. Please let me know if attention is needed to the box.
