Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, .6 mile RT)
Status: alive
The Talimena Scenic Drive is a National Scenic Byway offering 54 miles of spectacular views and incredible scenery in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. It extends from near Talihina, OK to near Mena, AR with many scenic stops along the way. About midpoint on the Drive, the Kerr Arboretum and Nature Center is a great place to stop and see a good representation of mixed pine/hardwood forests typical of the Ouachita Mountains, and to find this microbox.
Directions:
Traveling east on Talimena Byway, continue past Hwy 259 for a few miles to Kerr Arboretum and Nature Center on the left.
Clues:
Walk east from the parking lot to the picnic pavilion. Continue walking behind it for about 60 steps to a trail head jct. Go right (south) on the Forest Walk Trail for .2 mile to the Kerr Arboretum Trail. Continue south on this trail for about .1 mile, passing several signs describing the trees. From the Black Jack Oak sign, go 35 more steps to the Shortleaf Pine sign, then 5 more steps. Look right about 10 feet uphill for a pine tree with another tree growing out at its trunk. The camo microbox is behind the trunk under some rocks. Please rehide well.
