History abounds in this area of North Idaho. Coupled with the beautiful country it seemed just perfect for the next Past Post Letterbox.
There are a couple of ways to get to this letterbox. You can drive to the place using National Forest roads or you can ride or walk on The Trail of The Hiawatha. Either way, you need to get to the Adair area. If you choose to ride or walk The Trail of The Hiawatha, there is a fee to be paid for a day use pass. The fee is $8.00 per person. It is a very nice trail and a beautiful area with tunnels and trestle to experience. They have done a wonderful job putting this trail to good use. Well worth the time and fee money spent to explore.
But, I purposely planted this letterbox in an area that it can be hunted and found without having to pay the day use fee. Between Tunnel 25 and Tunnel 26 there is a Forest Service road that is accessible to all. The road intersects the Hiawatha Trail and the letterbox is planted close by.
to hunt the letterbox fee free: Travel out of Wallace Idaho up Placier Creek. Head for Moon Pass. This Forest Service Road 456 is a high mountain road that is very well maintained. It does climb from around 2789 feet elevation to 4921 feet. At Moon Pass you will drop down the other side into the North Fork of the St. Joe River area. Note the large dead cedar trees. Evidence of the 1910 fire. Roughly 19 miles from Wallace You will come to another Forest Service Road that turns off to the left (easterly) towards Roland and Shefoot Mountain. This is the Loop Creek road, FSR # 326. This road is a little rougher and does narrow. We did this trip in our sedan with no trouble. When this road forks keep to the right. Do not go to Roland, stay to the right and continue your journey to the Adair area. Travel up the Loop Creek Forest Service road for approximately 7.5 miles to the Adair area. Stop at the Adair parking area. Here you can see both tunnels. Tunnel 25 to the east and Tunnel 26 to the west. There is a information kiosk and rest area. You are in the right place now. Walk over to the information kiosk. Turn so that your back is to it. Look to your right at 1 o'clock. You should see two Cedar trees. Look right between them and take 44 steps to that point. When you look at the ground you should see two old iron rails. Turn right and follow the rails to the cedar trees at there end. Find the letterbox in the midst of their trunks. Letterbox is covers with some railroad tie fragments.
The town of Adair was on the other side of Tunnel 25 and planting there would be the best, but I didn't want everyone to have to pay the day use fee just to find the letterbox. If you are wanting to enjoy the history of this area via the trail the price is well worth it and then the letterbox will just be a little added icing on the cake, so to speak. Either way I hope you enjoy the hunt and your time in this wonderful area.
Note: Forest Service Road 456 travels from Wallace to Avery Idaho along the North Fork of the St. Joe River. You can come up from the St. Maries area using this road. When you gain access to Loop Creek Road 326 turn right (easterly) and travel to the Adair area. If you do chose to come in by this route, you will get the pleasure of driving through a few tunnels once used by the trains of old.
