C.D. Lane Park, Maplecrest, NY

My first summer job was as a lifeguard at this lake. I spent 5 summers working here, and it was a great summer job. When I worked here, there was a day fee (nice place to picnic, swim, relax), and dogs were not allowed. That was several years ago though. This year (2006), there are no lifeguards and I don't think the Park is officially open, but on the day I planted this, the gates were open and there were many people here.

Pull in through the gate and take a left. Follow the road to the circle, and park here. Enter the woods, and follow the path in a western direction through the woods along the water until the path turns south. Continue following the trail until you see a large white birch where the beaver did not get his/her job done. In the middle of the path before the birch is a small white pine that resembles a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. From this tree, at 140 degrees is another large white birch the beaver hasn’t found. To the left of this birch is a large oak with a pile of rocks at its base. Look underneath to find the Lifeguard.

To get back to your car, return the way you came or continue on the path. It will eventually come out at the corner of the field near the dam, and you will have no problem finding your way back to where you started.
