St. Francis at Reist Sanctuary letterbox honors the Patron Saint of Animals. Reist Wildlife Sanctuary is owned by the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club. This 110 acre oasis of woodland provides level trails for hiking and opportunities for observing over 56 species of birds and other little critters.

Directions: Route 146 (Balltown Rd.) to Village Road. Turn right onto Heather Street and follow it until you reach Thackery Court. Park in the cul-de-sac and follow the red entry trail into the woods. Walk past the entrance sign containing the sanctuary’s map if you would like to acquaint yourself with the trails. You will immediately see a log bench ahead on the right side of the trail. From this bench continue down the trail for 13 steps. At this point you should be standing on a knotted root embedded into the ground. To your right is a tree which has a red trail sign attached. Take a compass bearing of 110 degrees and walk to a large tree with the treasure hidden under a log. You’ll need a stamp pad for this box. After re-hiding the box, you can return to your vehicle or continue on the red trail and turn right at the yellow trail to find one of Sahalie’s series of three letterboxes.
