General Information

Costa Rica is an incredibly interesting country in Central America where 6% of the world’s biodiversity is found in far less than 1% of the world’s land mass. It is like a giant Nature Preserve.

Rara Avis is a private natural preserve located in Costa Rica and is a real gem.

Access to Rara Avis is by a tractor pulled wagon or by hiking up the usually muddy trail.

We visited Costa Rica in February, 2006 and traveled with GAP Adventures. The trip was incredible and logistics and GAP support were complete and precisely as described in their literature.

We spent 2 days of our 17-day adventure in Rara Avis and stayed in cabins and ate at the Waterfall Lodge.

The rainforest hikes, from the lodge, were truly memorable as we trekked around in our supplied rubber boots.

Being a rain forest, Rara Avis usually gets its share of precipitation, although we were quite fortunate to have two sunny days.

The ‘Rara Avis’ Letterbox is located on the grounds at the Waterfall Lodge.

Information about Costa Rica, Rara Avis and GAP Adventures is readily available on the Internet.

We have no association with GAP but were so impressed with their overall operation, we have already booked an Inca/Galapagos adventure with GAP for next year.

Clues

From the Waterfall Lodge, proceed down the wooded path toward the entrance where you entered the grounds from the tractor ride and/or hike.

Before leaving the ‘front yard’, you will see a sign ‘Catarata’ leading to the right toward the waterfalls.

About 30 paces along this path, there are a rock and a tree about 3 paces right from the path.

About 3 paces to the right, and slightly downhill, of the rock and tree, you will see a clump of trees.

About 3 paces downhill from the clump of trees is a single tree.

The Rara Avis Letterbox is located under some rocks in the trunk of the tree.

Watch for pit vipers & poisonous frogs.
