Head East out of Mount Horeb on the Military Ridge Bike Trail. Watch for Waltz Park on your left and a welcome sign to the Upper Sugar River Watershed on your right.
Now enjoy a beautiful section of the bike trail. You will pass an abandoned quarry and see several magnificent oak trees that are remnants of the oak savanna that once dominated this area.
Cross two wooden bridges. After the second bridge (about 1 1/2 miles from Waltz Park), take a rest at the shelter.
As you look across the bike trail, consider the grandmother oak tree that has stood at least a hundered years on that spot--watching the prairie burn, the trains whistle by, and the younger trees move in.
Notice directly on a line between you and this oak, a tall straight young Black Walnut tree. At its base, discover your treasure.
Note: If you are coming from the east toward Mount Horeb on the bike trail, look for the rest stop shelter about 1/2 mile after crossing Town Hall Road.
