On April 21, 1836, the Texan army, led by Sam Houston, defeated the Mexican army at San Jacinto, a field southeast of what is now downtown Houston, securing Texas' independance from Mexico. See http://www.sanjacinto-museum.org/ for more information on the battle.

In honor of the battle a memorial was erected on the battlefield, resembling the Washington Monument with a star on the top, it is 15 feet taller than that monument. San Jacinto Hall, a residence hall at the University of Texas in Austin, was dedicated in 1999.

This letterbox honoring the battle of San Jacinto is hidden in a fairly well trafficked area, especially during the workday and during football games, so please try to be discreet. If you try to find it during an evening or weekend you should be able to find parking along the street. If you come during the day your closest parking would be in the Trinity or Brazos garages at the University of Texas. See http://www.utexas.edu/parking/parking/garages/ for more information and for directions.

Begin your search on the University of Texas at Austin campus at the corner of 21st Street and San Jacinto Boulevard, under the shadow of the football stadium. If you aren't already there, cross to the southwest corner of the intersection and walk west on 21st street until you've crossed Waller Creek. Turn left onto the first sidewalk you see. San Jacinto Hall will now be on your right, with the signs for the Cypress Bend restaurant visible. Walk to the south/southeast along the sidewalk, with the dormitory to your right. You'll soon see a fire escape staircase. Walk to the left of the staircase and look behind it. You might need to hop over the little fence that surrounds its base. The box is wedged on top of a support beam under the stairs, about 6 feet off the ground. If you're much shorter than 5' 5" or so you may need the help of someone taller to reach it.

Once you've found the letterbox, feel free to stop in to Cypress Bend for a soda or snack. Also, tours of the dormitory are given four times a day when the building is open. You can call the San Jacinto Hall front desk at (512) 232-9050 to check for tour hours. Tours are also given of nearby Jester Hall, the country's largest dormitory. All of these locations are very near the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Texas Memorial Museum, and the Harry Ransom Center, so there's more than enough to do nearby to make a day of it!

I hope you enjoy this, the first letterbox I'll have placed!
