Beside the Bayside Band Shell

(Warren, Rhode Island)

(missing April '03)

Hiking: very short from the parking lot; longer but flat from downtown.
Clues: easy.
Placed by: Curious Crane

Welcome to Warren, Rhode Island, home to Latte Man and me since 1997.
It is a nice town with coastal views, a walkable downtown historic
district, antique stores, a good variety of restaurants, and some
gradual downtown revitalization in progress.

You may wish to precede your letterboxing visit with a Virtual
Historic Walking Tour at http://www.netsense.net/~richwill/Warren/.
This website includes a Walking Tour Map if you want to walk it while
you're in town. There is also a Word Search and Scavenger Hunt on the
site.

The letterbox is hidden in Burr's Hill Park, which appears on some
maps as Band Shell Park. The park is often busy with people enjoying
outdoor sports: baseball, basketball, tennis, youth football,
walking, cycling. The park's main focal point is the band shell.

Driving directions are to the parking lot at Burr's Hill Park.
Parking is free to all from after Labor Day to right before Memorial
Day. During the summer, resident stickers are required, except during
free concerts at the band shell, when all are welcome. Check
newspapers for concert dates and times- a great time to visit.
Otherwise, there is quite a bit of free parking on the streets of
downtown (watch for no parking signs in some areas), and you can
reach the park on foot by Water Street, the bike path, the park-and-
ride on Franklin Street just east of Main Street, or by going behind
Super Mart Convenience Store on Main Street.

From the north: take Route 114 South, which is called Main Street all
the way through Warren. Turn right 0.2 mile after crossing the bridge
from Barrington (it's the second bridge in Barrington) at a Y-
intersection at 1776 Liquors onto Water Street. Follow the street
almost all the way to the end, looking for Burr's Hill Park with its
big white band shell on your left.

From the south: Take Route 114 North (Main Street). Go 0.9 mile past
the "Entering Warren" sign. At a stoplight just north of Super Mart,
where the East Bay Bike Path crosses the street, take a left onto
Campbell Street. Go to the end, and turn left at the stop sign onto
Water Street. A short way down on the left you'll see the band shell
at Burr's Hill Park.

Standing in the parking lot, look across the street to the Warren
Town Beach. Here you can see the Warren River flowing toward the
upper Narragansett Bay. The park there has nice grass and shade trees
and some playground equipment. Whether or not it is an enticing place
to swim is a matter of opinion. Just upstream you can see some of the
Bay Queen cruise boats at the dock, and you may even see one under
way on the water.

Clues: Turning back to Burr's Hill Park, find one of the openings in
the fence and walk through it. Although the park is often busy with
people, letterboxers who are careful and nonchalant should be able to
manage most of the time. Walk past the band shell and admire its
facilities for outdoor concerts. Then walk behind the fence behind
home plate at the baseball diamond. Look uphill and you will see
another chain-link fence dividing the park from private yards. Go up
to the fence and walk roughly east a short distance. Slow down as you
approach the far end of the fence, to avoid falling over a drop-off.
Stand next to the last fencepost and then sit down on the "step" that
you are standing on. You will be looking down on the East Bay Bike
Path. Reach beneath your seat or squat down below it and peek deep
between the layers of your chair to find the prize. If, after
stamping in, you decide to descend the drop-off, watch out for low-
lying old, brown wires.
