Utah State Grass - Indian Ricegrass

Indian ricegrass, Oryzopsis hymenoides, is a native perennial bunchgrass.

This grass is a fine addition to any xeriscape and will grow quite large if given the room. The open, spangled appearance when in flower or fruit is very attractive, especially in backlight. In the past, the grass was used as a food staple by the Indians especially when the corn crop failed. Seed of the ricegrass was gathered and ground into meal or flour and made into bread.

This stamp was carved by 11 yr. old Pony Princess.

DIRECTIONS: On I-80 between Salt Lake City and Wendover, east bound, stop at the rest stop between mile markers 56 - 58

CLUES: South of the restrooms, find the Wild Horse Range – Cedar Mountain sign. Take the dirt trail that goes on up behind it. At the fork in the path at the first rock mound, stay left towards the “window” rock. As you approach the window, stop at the tip of this rock mound and go around to the right about 8 steps. You will be on the other side (west), from the window. Look down on the left, at the base of the rock mound for small rocks hiding the film canister. Please be discreet and hide it well.
