Level of Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult with some steep hills
Time: Allow 3-4 hrs (about 5 miles round-trip)

Directions:
The Seasons letterboxes are on the Taconic Crest Trail, commonly known as the Snow Hole Trail, on Route 2 in Petersburg, NY. The Snow Hole is a deep stone crevasse that contains ice and/or snow for most of the year. The best time to see it is in the Spring. However, it is a nice refreshing spot to stand above or climb down into to cool off in the summer.

Take Route 2 from Troy to Grafton. From the Grafton Lakes State Park (blinking yellow light), it is 12.2 miles. You will travel through Petersburg and go up a huge hill. There will be a yellow road sign stating “Hiking Trail” with a little hiking man on it. Just after the sign, you will see a large parking area on the right. Park here and walk across the street to the trail. There is a tree with a blue trail marker stating “Taconic Crest Trail” marking the beginning of the trail.

**Once on the blue trail, you will follow it until you reach the Snow Hole.

Clues:

Spring Box:

Continue on the blue trail past the Hopkins Forest wooden map. You will come to a split in the trail, but stay straight following the blue trail. You will shortly come to an oddly shaped 4-trunked maple tree with a blue trail maker on the right side of the trail. Here, turn to your left and walk 11 paces to a half dead white Birch tree. Buried on the left side under bark and twigs is the Spring Box.

Summer Box:

Continue on the blue trail. You will travel down a hill and then up a steep one. Soon, a small trail with a sign stating “Shepherd’s Well Trail” will veered off to your right, keep straight on the blue trail. A little while later, you will travel across a series of 2-planked boards in the trail. You’ll then go up a hill and then it’ll flatten out. You will then come to a tree on you left hand side with a blue trail marker on it. From here, count 15 paces as you continue to walk down the trail and then walk 9 paces East to a 1.5 trunked partly rotted tree (may be elm or river birch). Buried on the left side of the tree is the Summer Box.

Fall Box:

Continue on the blue trail. You’ll come to a wooden sign for the “Birch Brook Trail,” but stay straight on the blue trail. After a while, you will come across more 2-planked boards in the trail. You then go up a long steep hill and about mid-way, you will see a wooden sign stating “VT Corner Marker” on the left hand side. At the top of the hill, you’ll come to a small open area with a trail leading off to the right, stay straight on the blue trail. Walk a little longer and you will come to a large opening with beautiful mountainous views (great spot for pictures), especially in the fall. At the beginning of the opening, there is a “Y” in the trail. Veer left 12 paces and turn West, towards the mountainous views. You will see a 3-trunked tree next to some raspberry bushes. Buried on the right side of the tree under some brush and a rock is the Fall Box.

Winter Box:

Continue to follow this trail a short distance. It merges with the blue trail on the other side of the opening. Shortly, you will be able to see more mountainous views as you continue on the trail. You’ll go down a hill and soon come upon an unmarked path on your right, stay straight on the blue trail. Slightly further and you will come to a “Y” in the trail with a “Snow Hole” sign pointing right. Take this trail and descend down a small hill and the Snow Hole will be right in front of you. Facing the entrance of the Snow Hole, turn left and walk 12 paces to a large Oak tree. Behind the Oak tree in a hole at its base, you will find the Winter Box.

Enjoy the Snow Hole and return the way you came.
