Under 4 feet of snow! Feb 2011
SLIDE MOUNTAIN LETTERBOX via
CURTIS & ORMSBEE TRAIL
OLIVERIA, NY
Distance: 3.5 miles one way
Location: Southern Catskills - Ulster County , NY
Trail Map #43 (6I grid)
Nearest Town: Oliveria / Big Indian / Slide Mountain
Letterbox hidden on 10-06-02 at noon by J&G&"BUD"
Moved by us on 6/03/03 (no hits)
Terrain Difficulty: EXTREME Some hiking across wet patches of land and washed out logging roads but the rest on upgoing easy paths through spruce and hemlock forests. Main assent is a very rocky trail.
Directions/Clues
Trail starts at the Slide Mountain trail head. (yellow markers)
Follow the trail for 1 mile past the "red marked" main ascent trail to Slide Mountain to catch the better way up via the Curtis & Ormsbee blue marked trail.
This Fall (2012) we will put a LB up there someplace. A plaque dedicated to John Burroughs, a great naturalist of the area is under the ledge.
Before you set out read the waiver of responsibility and disclaimer.
