AVALON LETTERBOX
STONY BROOK, NY
Placed by the Girards on August 13, 2002 in “Avalon” – a Nature Park dedicated to Paul Simons in the heart of Stony Brook, New York. Paul Simons was our close friend killed while riding his bicycle. The park is in memory of Paul’s love of the outdoors. It consists of 130 acres of gardens, ponds, and trails maintained by the Paul Simon Foundation.
Directions: Village of Head of the Harbor, Suffolk County. From the Long Island Expressway (495) take Exit 56 and go north on Rte. 111 (Wheeler Rd.) for 1.8 miles. Turn left at the light, continuing on Rte. 111 (now Hauppauge Rd.) for 2.3 miles to the junction of Rte. 25 and Rte 25A. Go straight across Rte 25 onto Rte 25A (North Country Rd.) and continue 4.3 miles. Turn left (north) onto Shep Jones Lane and proceed about 0.5 mile. The parking area is just off the road to the left in the Preserve's northeast corner. Look for The Nature Conservancy's oak leaf sign.
Clues: From the center of the labyrinth and facing away from Mountain Climber, take 68 paces down the southern path (path on the left as you face away from the climber) where you will see a tree split in half a few feet from the path. In the “V” of this tree is your treasure.
