I take great joy in handwritten letters, both those received and those sent, so it should come as little surprise that one of my favorite books is Alexandra Stoddard's Gift of a Letter. Though slender in length, it's filled with inspiration and motivation to reach out to those of importance in your life with a missive sent through the mail. An old-fashioned concept, perhaps, but the thrill of setting something out for the mail carrier to collect or finding an unexpected treat among a handful of bills can be one of life's sweetest delights. A letter needn't be perfect nor long; all that really matters is that it comes from the heart. Take this box as a reminder to keep in touch with the special people in your life with a quick note every now and again. You'll likely never know just how much those letters will mean.

Start your search for my letter to you at one of the best places near Ithaca to watch the sun set over Cayuga Lake, an opinion the Town of Ithaca leaders must agree with as there's an official park here. Admire the view, then head southeast on the road. Turn right at your first major opportunity, taking the road downhill. Enter the memorial to a different sort of sunset on your left. Go straight downhill again. Pass Brooks but don't wander into the Fuerst. Do, however, take a brief detour to the overlook on your left to see the beautiful little waterfall cascading down into the gorge. Return to the main path, then turn right at the Tree on the left through the Griffin's row. Observe the Finch as you head to the Crow's nest ahead. If you're there at the right time, you can feast on the wild strawberries growing all around.

When you find the bird almost in hand at the Foote, travel uphill six paces to the right. There you'll find your own gift in the wooden cradle, tucked under stone. Please rehide it carefully when you're through, replacing the stone and sprinkling leaves about to conceal your visit. Enjoy your time in this tranquil place, and may it serve as a reminder to send out a special letter of your own before too much more time slips away.
