NOTICE! THIS BOX WAS REMOVED FOR MAINTENANCE ON 6/23/08. I HOPE TO HAVE IT REPLACED BY 7/4/08.

The UP Bat Cave letterbox is located near the Bat Viewing site on Millie Hill in Iron Mountain.

From South Stephenson Ave (US2 South), take Park Avenue just past the Holiday gas station. From North Stephenson Ave (US2 North), take Third Street between Hardee’s and the Chapin Pit. At the top of Third Street, turn right onto Park Avenue.

From either direction stay on Park Avenue until you get to the Bat Viewing Site. It is clearly marked and there is plenty of parking in the gravel parking lot.

Park in the parking lot and head up the trail to the Bat Cave observation site. Be sure to read all of the signs along the way as they contain important clues to the location of the Bat Cave letterbox.

After you make your way to the observation site, your hunt will begin at the trail to the left of the “Bat Facts” sign.

Start by making your way the number of paces equal to the maximum speed of the Big Brown Bat. This will lead you to a flat rock in the trail and you will be about even with the south west corner of the fenced in area.

From here, follow the trail the number of paces equal to the number of years that the Ludington Mine was in operation. To the left of the trail you will see a tree that has not been burned (like so many up here) by a forest fire. There will be a rock at the base of this tree to the south-east.

Continue on the trail the number of paces equal to the number of years that the Millie Mine was in operation. You will be near the western edge of a small gully on the south side of the trail.

From the large tree at the western edge of the gully, proceed approximately 5 steps southward off the trail to a large tree with a good letterbox hiding spot on its southern base. Be sure to hide the box well when you are done with it.

Continue on the trail and enjoy a beautiful view of the city.

The box is in a clear container and contains a stamp & log book.

Terrain: Easy, with a mild uphill climb on a well worn path. Insect repellant is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED in the summer for a comfortable walk. Be sure to do a wood tick check when you return to the parking lot.

Distance to box: Less than a mile.
