DIRECTIONS: This box overlooks Lake Abert, an "inland sea" or huge akaline lake. From Bend, head south on Highway 97 and after LaPine veer left onto Highway 31. It's at least two hours from Bend to Paisley, a quaint town that holds an annual Mosquito Festival! At Valley Falls (gas station and cafe) turn back north on Highway 395. The scarpe that runs parallel to the lake is the highest in the US and quite a sight to see. No more than a few miles up the highway, along the lake, you'll come upong one of those large wooden geographic signs on the right side of the road, across from the lake. Stop here.

CLUES: The challenge of this box is it is hidden in plain sight, no more than 200 yards from the highway. However, it is hidden under algaeo-covered rocks and there are thousands on the scarpe face. Your hunt will not be direct -- you'll have to veer around small rocks occasionally. Think of yourself like a silver ball at the arcade -- pinging off one rock to another to get to the end.

SOOO, begin by standing with your back to the northwest edge of the sign, facing the scarpe. Look up the hillside for graffiti on rocks. Sight 70 degrees and walk 60 paces. The large rock should be covered in orange algae on its north side.

Stand on the north side of this rock cluster and look due north. Head 30 degrees for 93 paces to a tall rectangluar rock standing upright. It should be dark and embedded with glass-like shards of lava streaks.

Looking north, head 0 degress for 13 paces to rock with no orange algae. Standing on its northwest side bear 14 degrees for 44 paces to a truck-sized cluster of rocks.

You'll know you're at the right place if one of the rocks has an indention on top like a bird path or pestal. The box is tucked at the base of the birdbath rock.
