Show Low, AZ is “The Town Named for the Turn of a Card”. Take a few minutes to stop and see the statue that commemorates this event. It’s in a small park about 100 yards west of the intersection of Deuce of Clubs Ave. (Hwy 60) and White Mountain Blvd. (Hwy 260), marked by a clock out near the sidewalk.

From the park, go east on Deuce of Clubs to the edge of town, and then north on SR 77. After 3.8 miles, turn right toward Pintail Lake and park at the end of the road. This is a wastewater wetland, home to an amazing variety of birds. It is also known as the Allen Severson Memorial Wildlife Area. Allen was our friend Heather’s father. He also used to go quail hunting with Kristal’s dad. This is a beautiful tribute to his life and work.

From the parking lot, walk .2 miles to a T-junction. The right fork goes to a viewing platform. Take the left fork, to the enclosed viewing blind. It was from here that we saw a peregrine falcon on a big snag across the marsh. When you’ve enjoyed the sights, take 70 paces back toward the parking lot, stop and turn left. You should see a very large shaggy-bark juniper with branches falling down to the ground on both sides. The box is near the trunk, on its SW side. It’s about a foot up off the ground, suspended between two dead branches and covered with some loose wood.
