A drive-by for a hand-carved stamp. This box is big enough for hitch-hikers.

From Overgaard, take Hwy 260 east a few miles to the Bison Ranch housing development. Between the live bison pastures and Bison Town, turn south on Bison Ranch Trail. Watch the left side of the road and park near the horse, rider, and rattler. The box is near the west corner of the pedestal, under a bush. The bush is thorny, but if you grab the lowest branch and pull straight up, you can easily reach straight back to the box.

Between here and Show Low, you’ll see extensive damage from the Rodeo-Chediski forest fire that made national news in 2002. Most of the burned trees will be on the south side because this road provided a nice firebreak with the exception of just a few spots. The final and toughest battle for containment of the fire took place around the Heber-Overgaard community and they ended up taking the biggest hit as far as lost homes went. This fire required an unprecedented four Type 1 planning and management teams to finally get a handle on it. Kristal’s father worked as a Crew Liaison on this one, helping out with any personal issues that might arise. Many of the crew members suffered emotional breakdowns from the stress of defending the homes and property of their own friends and family.
