East Jewett, NY

New location, 7/5/07. It took me about 20 minutes round trip to replant the box. The stamp has nothing to do with the actual lake or beautiful scenery, but when you see it, you will realize why I carved the image I did.

Colgate Rd. is directly across from the East Jewett Post Office. Follow Colgate Rd. one and one-half mile to Colgate Lake on your right. There were several cars there both times I was there this weekend, so watch out for Muggles. People were friendly but not nosy. This is where the box was originally hidden. Make note of the lake.

To find the new location, do not park here, but continue up the road. The road becomes a dirt road, but is well traveled. At about 2/10 miles past Colgate Lake, there is a parking lot on the left with a sign saying "Forest Preserve Access Parking." Park here.

Leave your car, and follow the path directly behind the gate. You will cross through an open field. Walk across the field to where the path enters the woods. Almost as soon as you enter the woods, there is a grassy area that when I was there had many blueberry bushes. Walk to the "Do Not Litter" sign. If you reach the trail sign-in box, you've gone too far. From this sign, go 23 steps at about 280 degrees to a make shift fire pit at the base of an oak. From the fire pit, site 340 degrees. You should see a white birch, with a large oak slightly behind it, and then a three-trunk white birch behind the oak. Look in the crotch of this three-trunk white birch under bark and branches for the Colgate Lake letterbox.
