Please note: This letterbox is gone, the victim of the new landscaping around the pond. I'll check back from time to time and when it appears that the crew is through clearing and putting in new beds, I'll replace the box. May 2010.

Replaced 5-08-09 and moved.

Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts bring to mind the Great Depression of the 1930's. I can imagine my own grandmother busily sewing together one of these lovely quilts using scraps from her scrap basket. Such a quilt would be a cheerful reminder of the colorful flower gardens that she loved; a much needed lift during hard times. This pattern had become very popular during the 1920s and continued to be a favorite for many years. Hexagon templates for these quilts have been found that were made around 1770. This leads historians to believe that the hexagon pattern might be one of the oldest pieced patterns. The earliest known American made hexagon quilt is dated 1817 while a dated English hexagon quilt is dated even earlier. It's likely they were made for years before that time as quilts of this era were often not dated and few of the quilts made this early have survived to be enjoyed today.

Directions:

This box is located at the Mercer Arboretum & Botanical Gardens in Spring, Texas. Go east on 1960 from the Hardy Toll Road. Turn north onto Aldine Westfield Road. Watch for the signs and you will come to a stoplight at the Gardens. Turn right into the botanical gardens for this letterbox. Park by the visitor’s center.

Clues:

Go to the visitor’s center and get a map and walk around to enjoy the flowers. I remember how my grandmother enjoyed the beauty of flowers. To look for the box, find the North Garden Trailhead behind the daylily garden. Follow the trail over the footbridge until you come to the waterlilly garden and pond. As you walk around the pond, look for the wood footbridge on the right that leads to an island with 2 small cypress trees growing on it. Walk out on the island and look across to the other side of the pond. You'll see two benches in a small grassy clearing. The one on your right is your objective. Go back to the trail and continue on around the pond and sit on that bench. Look to your left and behind you. You'll see a large pine tree and a multi-trunk tree that's providing the shade in which you sit. Between those two trees, at their base, sits Grandmother's Flower Garden, nestled next to a rock and covered with another, which is covered with twigs and leafs. Please replace the rocks to protect the box and recover better than you found it. Thanks for taking the time to find my box.
